Xiaomi has introduced three new smartphones with the 12S series. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra with a huge camera stands out as the top model.
Since the launch of the Xiaomi 12 in December 2021, there has been speculation about a flagship model with a huge camera. The long-awaited Xiaomi 12 Ultra is now coming out as the Xiaomi 12S Ultra. Together with Xiaomi 12S and Xiaomi 12S Pro, the manufacturer presented the new top model.
Xiaomi 12S Ultra: 1 inch sensor, Leica camera and Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1
The outstanding feature of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is the circular camera module, which occupies the entire top third of the back of the smartphone. The core is the wide-angle with 50 MP resolution and the 1-inch Sony IMX989 sensor. With the Sharp Aquos R7 and the Sony Xperia Pro-I, there are currently only two other smartphones that use a sensor of this size.
In addition, Xiaomi uses the 1/2-inch Sony IMX586 sensor with 48 MP resolution twice – once for the ultra wide angle and once for the periscope zoom. The camera system was created in cooperation with Leica. The camera expert is responsible for the lenses (Leica Summicron lenses are used) and also contributes image profiles and filters in the software.
A 32 MP selfie camera is used on the front, which sits in a punch hole in the 6.73-inch AMOLED display. It has a resolution of 3,200 x 1,440 pixels and an adaptive refresh rate of 1 to 120 Hz.
Qualcomm’s updated top model Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is used as the processor. 8 or 12 GB RAM and 256 or 512 GB flash memory are available as memory variants. The battery has a capacity of 4,860 mAh. It can be charged with a cable with up to 67 watts and wirelessly with up to 50 watts. In the opposite direction, the battery can wirelessly deliver up to 10 watts to other devices.
The Xiaomi 12S Ultra has Harman Kardon stereo speakers and offers 5G, Wifi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity. The smartphone runs on the MIUI 13 user interface based on Android 12.
Xiaomi 12S and 12S Pro: upgrade with new processor
The Xiaomi 12S and 12S Pro are largely a further development of the Xiaomi 12 series , which has been available in Germany since spring 2022. Like the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, the other two models also come with the new Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. The camera systems were also created in cooperation with Leica.
The Xiaomi 12S Pro uses the same 6.73-inch display as the Ultra model, while the Xiaomi 12S has a slightly smaller 6.28-inch display. This also offers an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. The 12S Pro uses 4,600 mAh and 120 watts for the battery, the 12S has a 4,500 mAh battery that can be charged with 67 watts. Up to 50 watts are possible wirelessly with both.
The Xiaomi 12S Pro uses three 50 MP cameras. The Xiaomi 12S uses the same 50 MP sensor (Sony IMX707) for the wide angle and also has a 13 MP ultra wide angle and a 5 MP macro.
Xiaomi 12 Pro Dimension Edition
In addition to the 12S series, Xiaomi also introduced the Dimensity Edition of the Xiaomi 12 Pro. The smartphone uses the Mediatek Dimensity 9000+ processor and has a 5,160 mAh battery. The smartphone should be available in four colors and three memory variants. In terms of price, it should be on a par with the Xiaomi 12S.
Xiaomi 12S series: prices and availability
Xiaomi initially presented the 12S series for the Chinese market, where it should be available in the next few days. Prices start at 3,999 yuan (approx. 570 euros) for the Xiaomi 12S, 4,699 yuan (approx. 670 euros) for the smallest version of the Xiaomi 12S Pro and from 5,999 yuan (approx. 860 euros) for the Xiaomi 12S Ultra. The largest memory variant costs 6,999 yuan (approx. 1,000 euros).
There is still no information about an international market launch. But at least Xiaomi has published the press release for the presentation of the models in German. This gives hope that a release of at least the top model Xiaomi 12S Ultra is also planned in this country.
