iPhone 14 Max delayed

iPhone 14 (Plus): finally a big screen for less

Every September it’s time for another Apple event, and it just happened. Apple presented the new iPhone here: the iPhone 14 (Plus)! What’s new? And when will the sale start? This was mentioned during the presentation.

iPhone 14… Plus?

The biggest change is reflected in the format. Apple breaks with tradition: the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 both got a mini version, with a 5.4-inch screen. Now there is no longer a mini, but a larger size. This is the iPhone 14 Plus, with a screen diagonal of no less than 6.7 inches. The same size as the iPhone 13 Pro Max, so. The regular iPhone 14 again has a 6.1-inch screen – just like the iPhone 13. This is from now on the smallest ‘new’ iPhone.

And those screens may be more special than you think. For example, according to Apple, they are larger so that you can read texts more easily and you can watch your favorite series in all their glory. Among other things, because of the well-known OLED screen, True Tone, Dolby Vision and 1200 nits. And thanks to Ceramic Shield and water and dust resistance, they are very strong again!

Familiar design

The format changes, but the rest of the design looks suspiciously like that of the iPhone 13. And so does the iPhone 12. In fact, the flat sides, a notch and a diagonal arrangement for the camera lenses make them almost identical. And it is again made of high-quality aluminum, which makes it extremely sturdy.

Little has changed in the colors. Buyers have five options to choose from: midnight (black), starlight (white), (PRODUCT)RED (red), blue and purple. Those are almost the same colors as the iPhone 13. Except for the new purple color: it replaces the pink iPhone 13.

Better camera

Every year the iPhone gets a number of camera improvements. This year it is mainly the turn of the selfie camera. This new TrueDepth camera gains autofocus support – a first for the iPhone! All your shots will be razor sharp, regardless of your distance from the camera.

The aperture of this selfie camera has also changed: from ƒ/2.2 to ƒ/1.9. As a result, the camera captures more light and you can shoot up to twice sharper photos, even in photos with less good light. And the depth of field has been reduced, so you can now give your selfies a blurred background.

We shouldn’t forget the cameras on the back either. There is the 12-megapixel main camera with an aperture of ƒ/1.5. Are you shooting a photo or video in low light? Then it is now 2.5 times sharper than before. And with the ultra-wide-angle camera, it is now twice as sharp.

Making videos also becomes more convenient with Action Mode. Do you regularly record movies with a lot of movement, for example when you film a scene in which someone is being chased? Then you no longer need accessories such as a gimbal. With Action mode, the camera remains stable, and you only need your iPhone while filming.

And speaking of filming: there is now also a film mode. This shifts the focus to the most important subject in the picture, so viewers immediately know what to look at. And you can record in 4K at 24 fps. Look, that really brings out your inner filmmaker.

Crash Detection

Like the Apple Watch, the iPhone 14 (Plus) gets a helpful new feature: Crash Detection. It’s exactly what you think. If you get into an accident, your iPhone will recognize this and you will immediately receive a message to call the emergency services. With a single tap you come into contact with the right people, so that you are helped immediately.

Satellite connection

But suppose you get into an accident and you have no range: what then? Apple has thought of that too. The iPhone has satellite connection for the first time, so you can make an emergency report anytime and anywhere in the event of an emergency. Even if you don’t have internet or are in no man’s land.

You do have to point the iPhone at a satellite. Your device will show you which way to face – so you don’t have to be an expert on satellites.

Simply sharing your location is also possible with a satellite connection. Suppose you get stuck somewhere, then you immediately inform your friends and family. This way they receive a notification, they immediately know where you are and they have found you in no time.

The satellite feature launches in November. But not yet in the Netherlands: in the beginning it will only be available in the United States and Canada. It is still unclear when the function will appear here.

This is also new: improved battery life and A15 chip

Larger size, better camera, new color – of course these are not the only innovations of the iPhone 14 (Plus). The battery life, for example: it now lasts longer than ever after a single charge! For the iPhone 14 Plus, it’s even longer: Apple claims it has ‘All day battery life’. For example, you can play videos for up to 20 hours on the iPhone before your battery runs out, and 26 hours for the iPhone.

There is also another A15 Bionic chip. Doesn’t sound new at first glance, but it has had some internal changes. For example, it is 18% faster than the A15 chip in the iPhone 13, with the result that the graphics are a lot smoother. For example when you are gaming. Just a few more details: the new A15 Bionic chip has a 6-core CPU, 4 efficiency cores and a 16-core Neural Engine. Not an A16 chip as some iPhone users might have hoped, but Apple has made progress.

And then there’s another surprise for the eSIM. This one just got easier to use, and you can use several on the same device. But there’s more: in the United States, the iPhone no longer gets a SIM card port. As a result, US iPhone users should really embrace the eSIM if they want to buy a brand new device. This is not happening in other countries for the time being, So don’t worry, your SIM card doesn’t need to be taken anywhere for the time being.

The iPhone 14 (Plus) in summary

  • Same design as the iPhone 13.
  • Well-known functions such as Face ID, MagSafe charging and 5G internet return.
  • Available in Midnight (Black), Starlight (White), (PRODUCT)RED (Red), Blue and Purple.
  • The entry-level model has 128 GB of storage, the same as the iPhone 13. The maximum storage capacity is 512 GB.

Price and availability

Now the key question: what price tags do these iPhones get ? You only have the regular iPhone 14 at home from € 1,019 . For the iPhone 14 Plus you pay an even higher amount, € 1,169 to be specific. For comparison: last year you bought the iPhone 13 from € 909 , the iPhone 13 mini even for € 809 . That’s quite a difference.

You can order the iPhone 14 starting Friday, September 9 at 2:00 PM . You will then have it at home a week later, on Friday 16 September . The iPhone 14 Plus will follow later: on October 7, the delivery person will deliver it. These devices are then for sale at Apple.

This is what we think of the iPhone 14

The editors are very satisfied with the iPhone 14 (Plus). It’s not really innovative: inside and out it looks a lot like the iPhone 13 . But why would Apple radically change it if this formula still works? As far as we’re concerned, the iPhone 14 has all the coolness of the iPhone 13, but with some improvements. The camera and the A15 chip, for example. Although it is controversial here that the mini is gone: some colleagues will miss it, others are happy with a larger device. But yes, tastes differ. That price tag hurts though.
